Mark T Hegel, PhD
Professor of Psychiatry


Dr. Mark T. Hegel is Professor in Psychiatry and Community & Family Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in Hanover, NH. As a clinical psychologist his clinical practice specializes in providing treatment for depression and anxiety disorders with empirically supported psychotherapies. He is the Co-Director of the psychiatric adult outpatient services at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. His research has focused on the treatment of depression in medical and underserved populations, particularly in primary care and other non-traditional mental health settings. He has been the principal investigator, co-investigator or other significant contributor on over 20 R01 level research grants in this area. Dr. Hegel has particular expertise in the design and evaluation of problem solving and behavioral activation therapies. In the context of clinical services and research protocols he has trained hundreds of therapists to administer these therapies to their patient populations. His work is known nationally and internationally. In the past decade he has focused much of his effort on developing and evaluating computer- and internet-based tools and therapies to improve access to evidence-based treatments for depression and to enhance health services delivery models for depression management.
