Mark A Israel, MD
Professor of Pediatrics

As the Director of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Dr. Israel holds responsibility for cancer care at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and 17 outreach sites. His responsibilities include evaluating needs and opportunities for building the NCCC’s cancer research enterprise, including strategic planning, assessing and leading efforts to enhance the translational impact of research; operationalizing these strategic initiatives and allocating resources to achieve NCCC goals. To support and manage these efforts, Dr. Israel has identified leadership, built infrastructure in the form of shared resources and programmatic opportunities, and garnered resources necessary for cancer research activities. He serves as the university-wide spokesperson for cancer initiatives, leading the NCCC’s development and renewing its NIH-sponsored Cancer Center Support Grant and designation as a comprehensive cancer center in 2003, 2008, and 2014.

Dr. Israel is trained as a pediatric oncologist, and has an active laboratory research program in molecular oncology that is focused on understanding the molecular origins of brain tumors in children and in adults. Over the years, he has supervised over 50 postdoctoral scholars, medical staff fellows, and thesis students as well as over 60 rotation students and undergraduate students.
